Gavi, 50 years of Controlled Origin

Gavi, 50 years of Controlled Origin

A rapidly growing appellation, Gavi is one of the most beloved white wines in Italy and abroad due to its versatility and great aging potential. Made from 100% Cortese grapes, Gavi originates 30 km from the sea, in 11 municipalities of the province of Alessandria. In 2024, it celebrates 50 years of DOC status (which became DOCG in 1998).

Our new selection is dedicated to Gavi: three labels and six bottles exclusively reserved for Wine Club members – an exploration of the nuances of this exceptional, globetrotting white wine from southern Piedmont.

Le Marne Gavi DOCG 2023

Born from a vintage marked by a mild winter and dry spring, followed by crucial rains in May, June, and late August, Le Marne is a quintessential Gavi. From Cortese grapes grown on clay-limestone soils and kissed by the unique microclimate influenced by sea breezes and the nearby Apennines, this Gavi is produced through partial cold maceration, followed by gentle pressing and fermentation with indigenous yeasts in steel tanks. Elegant, fresh, and fragrant, round and savory, it pairs perfectly with carpaccio, sushi, and grilled fish.

Rovereto Gavi DOCG del Comune di Gavi 2023

The hill of Rovereto has always been considered the grand cru of Gavi from the municipality of Gavi. Its name likely refers to the ancient presence of oak forests; here, the clay soil is rich in iron, and the vineyard—at over 400 meters above sea level—is south-east facing. A portion of the Rovereto grapes undergoes cold maceration to fully express its distinctive aromas. The wine then matures for 5 months in steel before aging in the bottle. The result is a wine with intense and persistent aromas, good structure, and length—ideal for fresh summer dishes.

Fornaci Gavi DOCG 2021

Fornaci is no ordinary bottle. First produced in 1998, it was one of the few Italian labels to receive the Tre Bicchieri award “in absentia,” 10 years after its first vintage. It’s a long-living Gavi, showing its best over time with an ever-evolving character. It is produced only in outstanding years; despite the 2021 vintage being marked by significant climatic variations (early vegetative growth, late frosts, periods of drought), the harvest yielded exceptional grapes. This wine boasts great olfactory complexity, excellent structure, and above all, remarkable harmony and character, ready to age for up to 10 years.
